Central Precinct

Project overview

The project links Central Station, the new Metro, the Sydney Light Rail extension, and current services.

Key benefits

Transport for NSW is investigating opportunities to renew the Central Precinct. The Central Precinct Project will:

  • Create vibrant new public spaces
  • Expand Sydney CBD’s commercial core
  • Better connect communities and businesses
  • Help deliver a centre for technology and innovation.

During 2016 and 2018 we asked the community, customers, stakeholders and industry what they would like to see at Central Station and in the surrounding areas. The feedback was that people want a vibrant city hub with easy access to transport services. They wanted the precinct to become a destination in itself, not just a transport interchange, with cultural and leisure opportunities as well as open spaces.

Central Precinct will be at the core of the Sydney Innovation and Technology Precinct, hosting creative and tech businesses that will provide the jobs of the future. Transport for NSW will work closely with the Department of Industry to ensure that planning of the Central Precinct is coordinated with planning for the new Innovation and Technology Precinct.

Project status

The revitalisation of Central Station is underway. Central Walk, a new underground concourse that will better connect passengers to trains and light rail is under construction. A new underground Metro station is also being built, which is expected to open in 2024 and the new CBD Light Rail is nearing completion.

The next step is to create a great place surrounding Central Station.

We will keep the community informed about opportunities to have your say. Email projects@transport.nsw.gov.au to join the mailing list and receive project updates.
