Digital Systems Facility

Project overview

Transport for NSW is rolling out new technology to upgrade Sydney’s rail network and introducing modern signalling systems as part of the Digital Systems Program.

Key benefits

Key features of the new facility include:

  • A new building for Digital Systems technology
  • Exhibition room with tiered seating
  • Dedicated training rooms and labs
  • Shared office space and breakout areas
  • Reception and concierge service
  • Storage space
  • Staff parking
  • Amenities.

The Digital Systems Program involves replacing trackside signalling equipment with the latest European Train Control System Level 2 technology, providing shorter and more consistent journey times.

Digital Systems technology is a key enabler towards achieving the goals of Future Transport 2056, delivering increased capacity and significant performance, cost and safety benefits for both passenger and freight services.

A new Digital Systems Facility will be built at the existing Chullora Rail Centre, creating a facility to enable the Digital Systems Program to undertake integration testing of the new digital systems components prior to implementation on the operational railway.

As well as testing of the digital systems components, the facility includes learning spaces for the Digital Systems Program.

Early work including geotechnical, service relocation, survey and design work has commenced. Major construction is scheduled to commence mid 2020. The new facility is expected to be completed in late 2021.
