Garfield Road - North West Growth Area

Reviewed

Project overview

The NSW Government is planning for the future with an upgrade proposal for Garfield Road in Riverstone and Marsden Park. The upgraded corridor will support current and future traffic demands, reduce travel times and congestion, economic development along the corridor and promote alternative modes of transportation.

Project information

Background

Garfield Road is already a busy state road catering to thousands of vehicles each day. The expected increase in population and development in the area is expected to result in a substantial increase in the number of vehicles on the road.

The NSW Government is planning for the future with an upgrade proposal for Garfield Road in Riverstone to improve safety, traffic flow, and access for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users. The upgrade aims to address current and future traffic demands, reduce travel times and congestion, and provide better connections to key destinations in the area.

The overall Garfield Road corridor is 7.4 kilometres long. Transport has split the corridor into three distinct sections:

  • Garfield Road East extends 3.4 kilometres between Piccadilly Street, Riverstone and Windsor Road, Box Hill
  • Garfield Road Central extends 800 metres between Piccadilly Street and Denmark Road, Riverstone
  • Garfield Road West extends 3.2 kilometres between Richmond Road, Marsden Park and Denmark Road, Riverstone.

Benefits

  • Improving road capacity to meet future traffic growth.
  • Remove the at grade rail crossing.
  • Supporting residential and employment growth.
  • Enable alternative modes of transportation.
  • Promote public transport use.
  • Improving freight productivity.
  • Improving road safety.
  • Improving connectivity between Richmond Road and Windsor Road.

Features

Key features of the upgrades include:

  • upgrading the existing two lane road to a four lane divided road, with capacity to widen to six lanes in future, if required
  • traffic signals would be installed at key intersections
  • providing facilities for pedestrians and cyclists
  • providing bus priority at the new intersections
  • improving the flood resilience
  • upgrading and realigning the existing road to improve road safety
  • providing a new bridge over First Ponds Creek (Garfield Road East) and Eastern Creek (Garfield Road West)

Community information

Community consultation

Transport for NSW has held various consultation activities with the community and stakeholders to gather feedback and input on the proposed Garfield Road upgrade in Riverstone since 2013.

More recently in late 2020, Transport for NSW prepared environmental assessments, for Garfield Road East and Garfield Road West proposals. More information can be found in Reports, Community Updates and Project Notifications tabs on this page.
