Grade separating road interfaces
Project overview
The Australian and NSW Governments are jointly funding a proposal to grade separate a number of road and rail interfaces in NSW as a result of the Inland Rail project. The Australian Government has committed $150 million with the NSW Government contributing an additional $37.5 million to support the planning and construction of the grade separated interfaces.

Dec 2021 - Grade separate road and rail interfaces
Transport for NSW is currently in the planning stages to grade separate road and rail interfaces at four priority locations. The project will investigate options and construct bridges, underpasses or side tracks where the Inland Rail crosses the NSW road network to improve road safety and improve freight efficiency.
The locations where the Inland Rail line will intersect with the NSW road network have been evaluated based on a risk assessment including the Australian Level Crossing Assessment Model. The highest priority locations have progressed through to development. These are:
- Olympic Highway at Harris Gates (existing crossing)
- Newell Highway at Tichborne (existing crossing)
- Castlereagh Highway at Curban (new crossing)
- Tomingley Road at Narromine (new crossing)
Project information
Background
The Inland Rail project will see an increase in the frequency, speed and length of trains along new and existing railway to connect Melbourne to Brisbane. As a result, prolonged delays and the potential for crashes will increase where the road and rail meet impacting on the efficiency and safety of the road network.
Transport for NSW prioritised the existing and proposed crossings and have progressed these through to development. They are:
- Olympic Highway at Harris Gates (existing crossing)
- Newell Highway at Tichborne (existing crossing)
- Castlereagh Highway at Curban (new crossing)
- Tomingley Road at Narromine (new crossing)
A number of grade separations will be delivered as part of the Inland Rail project, delivered by ARTC. The four priority locations above are in addition to the ARTC delivered grade separations. A further 18 sites will also be investigated by Transport for NSW for consideration in the future.
