Background

In May 2023, Transport for NSW completed work on a pinch point upgrade along Henry Lawson Drive, Georges Hall.

Georges Hall pinch point upgrade – The upgrade is part of Transport for NSW’s ongoing program to identify congestion hotspots at intersections across Sydney. The southbound lane on Henry Lawson Drive, between Beale Street and Rabaul Road, was identified at contributing to traffic holdups and longer journey times for motorists. The critical stretch of road includes one of only two signalised intersection between Hume Highway and Milperra Road.

About 6,100 vehicles use Henry Lawson Drive through Georges Hall during weekday peak periods alone. Southbound traffic queues during busy periods can stretch back more than three kilometres from Milperra Road. Left unaddressed, wait times for southbound motorists will more than double during the next decade.

The upgrade will help reduce congestion on this busy corridor. The design includes utilising the existing eastern road shoulder between Endeavour Road and Rabaul Road to create a continuous dual southbound lane from Beale Street to Rabaul Road. It also involves prohibiting right turns from Henry Lawson Drive onto Rabaul Road. Despite only a few road users making this turn, it has been identified as adding additional congestion, as it slows or stops northbound through-traffic.

Transport for NSW called for public comment on the upgrade during July and August 2020. A consultation report was published in early-2021.

Investigation work was carried out between 2017 and 2020.

The project was completed in May 2023.
