Lignum Creek Bridge replacement

The Lignum Creek bridge replacement project was completed in early May 2019, an impressive eight weeks ahead of schedule.

The NSW Government provided $6.7 million as part of the Bridges for the Bush Program to demolish the existing old wooden bridge and replace it with a new, wider 72 metre long concrete bridge.

The bridge has been replaced for less than $6.2 million which is a half a million dollar cost saving.

Motorists, freight and heavy vehicle operators will have increased efficiency and reliability with the new longer, stronger, wider and safer concrete bridge.

The Lignum Creek Bridge is an important crossing on the Mid Western Highway with more than 144 vehicles travelling on this section of road each day including 45 heavy vehicles which account for 32 per cent of bridge traffic.

The bridge joins Grenfell on the Mid Western Highway with West Wyalong on the Newell Highway.

The project supported local employment and investment by employing 16 people: six people during bridge construction and up to 10 people during road construction.

Lignum Creek Bridge, on the Mid Western Highway was built in 1937 and is narrow, in poor condition and nearing the end of its life.

The NSW Government provided $6.7 million for the replacement of the Lignum Creek Bridge as part of the Bridges for the Bush program.

To minimise disruption to motorists on the Mid Western Highway, a side track was built next to the bridge and used to divert traffic during the project construction. The side track has now been removed.
