Monaro Highway and Kosciuszko Road
Project overview
The NSW Government has provided $20 million to build new overtaking lanes and improve safety on Monaro Highway and Kosciuszko Road.

Jun 2019 - Safety improvement work complete
Motorists will now enjoy smoother and safer journeys with the completion of the Monaro Highway and Kosciuszko Road Overtaking Lane and Safety Improvement Package.
The NSW Governments $20 million commitment to improve safety along Kosciuszko Road and Monaro Highway included the completion of three additional overtaking lanes, three kilometres of new guardrail installations, 4.3 kilometres of shoulder widening and 30 kilometres of audio tactile line-marking.
These upgrades will improve traffic flow and congestion during the snow season. However, we still urge all road users to drive safely and take appropriate precautions, especially during and after snowfall.
Project information
Background
Monaro Highway and Kosciuszko Road form part of the key freight, commuter and recreational route between the Snowy Mountains region and the ACT through to Sydney and surrounds. This is the key route used by motorists travelling to the NSW snow fields.
The focus of the $20 million improvements will be the Monaro Highway between the ACT border and Cooma and Kosciuszko Road from south of Cooma to Jindabyne via Berridale.

Locations
Additional westbound lane on Kosciuszko Road from Barry Way to Alpine Way
After being temporarily suspended for the 2018 snow season, work restarted on Monday 8 October 2018 to finalise the additional westbound lane on Kosciuszko Road, between Barry Way and Alpine Way in Jindabyne. Work is expected to be complete by May 2019, weather permitting.
Work started in October 2017 to build the additional westbound lane on Kosciuszko Road for 1.6 kilometres, between the Barry Way roundabout and the intersection with Alpine Way, Jindabyne. The project cost is approximately $6.8 million and is aimed at improving traffic efficiency for motorists visiting the snow fields.
At the same time $2.7 million worth of asset maintenance work is being carried out, including repairs to the culvert at Widows Creek and rehabilitation to the existing road.
In June 2018 the additional lane was opened to traffic in time for the 2018 snow season. Work to finalise the project will include high friction road resurfacing and the installation of roadside drainage and safety barriers between Alpine Way and Barry Way.
Working hours are between 7am and 6pm from Monday to Saturday, weather permitting, with a break every second Saturday and Monday.
If you have any concerns about the extended work hours please contact the Project Manager on 1800 771 546.
Additional south bound overtaking lane on the Monaro Highway south of Michelago
After being temporarily suspended for the 2018 snow season, work has restarted on the new southbound overtaking lane five kilometres south of Michelago.
From Monday 22 October 2018 work will be carried out between 7am and 6pm Monday to Friday, weather permitting.
If you have any concerns about the extended work hours please contact the Project Manager on 1800 771 546.
The length of work will be approximately 1.6 kilometres and will also include shoulder widening and installation of roadside safety barrier.
Work on the project is being carried out in stages to reduce disruption to road users.
Additional west bound overtaking lane on Kosciuszko Road at Coolringdon
Transport for NSW engaged Snowy Monaro Regional Council to build a westbound overtaking lane on Kosciuszko Road, near Slacks Creek at Coolringdon.
The length of work is approximately 1.5 kilometres and also included rehabilitation of the adjoining road pavement.
The project was completed in June 2018 in preparation for the 2018 snow season.
Road safety improvements
Safety improvements are being made at targeted locations along both the Monaro Highway and Kosciuszko Road including the installation of safety barrier, profile line marking and shoulder widening.
Safety improvement work is being completed at the intersection of Poveys Road and the Monaro Highway at Colinton, including widening the road shoulders, resurfacing the road pavement and removing vegetation to improve sight lines and turning movements.
Work has also commenced at the intersection of Newton Street, leading onto Bumbalong road, and the Monaro Highway at Colinton. Work includes widening the road shoulders, the removal of some trees to improve sight lines and road resurfacing.
The extension of guardrail is also underway at key locations along the Highway between the ACT and Cooma. New and extended guardrail is being installed at Williamsdale, Bredbo and Bredbo North to protect motorists in the event of run-off crashes from hazards including trees and drainage structures.
Benefits
The project will improve road safety and traffic efficiency for road users in the Snowy Mountains region by:
- Decreasing travel time and reducing congestion during peak snow season at Jindabyne by providing an additional westbound lane on Kosciuszko Road from Barry Way to Alpine Way
- Providing two new overtaking lanes to improve traffic efficiency on this key route to the snow
- Improve safety on both roads by installing safety barrier, profile line marking and shoulder widening to address run off road accidents, which are the most predominant crash type on these roads.
The community will be kept informed as the project progresses.
