Project information

Background

Between 2007 and 2009, the Victorian Department of Transport (formerly VicRoads) led preliminary investigations to identify the best location for a new river crossing.

At the time, due to its heritage listing the existing Swan Hill Bridge was to be retained and Option 9a - located about 120 metres upstream (east) of the existing bridge - was endorsed as the preferred option following extensive community consultation.

However, a recent state-wide review of timber truss road bridges in NSW has identified Swan Hill Bridge to be removed, and the bridge will be delisted from NSW and Victorian stage heritage registers. As part of this process, we will consult with community about ways to recognise the history of the bridge before it is removed.

Because the existing bridge will be removed, we are now able to consider building a future bridge on the same alignment. This option is known as the McCallum Street Option.

Transport for NSW is now leading this next stage of planning and has sought community feedback about the two options: Option 9a or the new McCallum Street Option. Feedback and comments provided by the community will to help inform detailed design and further planning investigations.

While planning is being carried out, the existing bridge will remain open and continue to provide safe journeys over the river. We will continue to carry out routine scheduled maintenance and will let you know in advance of this work.
