Museum Station Heritage Restoration

Reviewed

Project overview

The NSW Government is conducting heritage restoration works at Museum Station.

Key benefits

  • Restore important heritage at the station
  • Showcase Sydney’s history
  • Enhance the visual appeal of the station

Project History

Works were conducted in 2016 at Museum Station as part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program, including the installation of a new lift connecting the station’s entry to the underground station concourse. Two lifts were also installed between the station concourse and the platforms. Other access improvements included a new ramp at the station entrance, a family accessible toilet and further refurbishment of the toilets within the concourse.
As a part of the station upgrade, heritage features, including bathrooms, tiling balustrades and a cast iron framed barrier portal over the ticket gates in the southern concourse, were restored and refurbished in line with their original appearance. These works were completed in November of 2016.

The Hyde Park South Café was required to be demolished during the upgrade and in April 2019 the City of Sydney commenced rebuilding the café.

Project Status

Minor works remain at Museum station, primarily an historic artwork installation and integration of the Liverpool Street station lift lobby and the new café.

Heritage artwork installed in 1992 was damaged and required replacement. During the removal of this artwork, the project team discovered original artwork from when the station first opened in 1926. These heritage artworks found at the station are being conserved, with a combination of new and original artwork proposed to be installed throughout the station as a part of the Heritage Interpretation Strategy (2019) and bring new life to the history of the station.

Design for the new artworks has begun. Plans are in place for the station tunnels to be broken up into four themes which will determine where the artworks will be displayed.

Works on the new Hyde Park South Café recommenced in April 2019. Construction of the café building is scheduled to continue throughout 2019. On completion the existing lift lobby will be integrated with the new café.
