Project overview
Transport for NSW originally proposed to replace the existing signalised pedestrian crossing on New Illawarra Road, Manai, with a pedestrian bridge, aiming to improve the road's traffic flow. It also aimed to improve safety and connectivity between the eastern and western sides of New Illawarra Road for both pedestrians and cyclists.

Mar 2018 – Project not proceeding
Transport for NSW notified the community in December 2017 of plans to install a pedestrian bridge across New Illawarra Road near Barry Road, Menai.
The feedback was assessed and as a result, the decision was made not to proceed with the project. Transport for NSW thanks everyone who contributed their feedback on the proposal.

Background
The work was to include:
- construction of a steel pedestrian bridge, with access ramps on the each side of New Illawarra Road
- construction of a shared path to connect to existing paths on the eastern side of New Illawarra Road
- removal of the existing pedestrian crossing, including traffic signals and pedestrian fencing.
