Newcastle Interchange is the new major public transport hub serving the Newcastle area.

As the gateway to the city centre, it is now the final stop for customers travelling to Newcastle by train on the Central Coast and Newcastle, and Hunter lines. Wickham was chosen as the interchange location due to its potential to trigger development and economic growth in what has been identified as the city’s future CBD.

The Newcastle Interchange is was being delivered as part of a broad program of work including the truncation of the former heavy rail line, new train stabling and turnback facilities to the east of Hamilton Station, signaling and track work, a new pedestrian bridge and new staff facilities.

This project involved closing the railway and ending train services east of the former Wickham Station on the Newcastle branch line, and constructing a new station and transport interchange west of Stewart Avenue, Wickham.

The project included:

  • removal of train services between Wickham and Newcastle Stations
  • constructing and operating a new train stabling facility to the north of Hamilton Station
  • constructing and operating a new station and transport interchange for heavy rail, kiss and ride, and taxis to the west of Stewart Avenue, Wickham.
