Inter-trips projects

We have upgraded the capacity of several substations and sectioning huts in the Central, North, West, and Illawarra regions.

Argyle Substation

We have conducted works at Argyle Substation to increase the power capacity.

Chalmers Street Substation

We have built a new electrical substation within the Prince Alfred Sidings Precinct, east of Central Station. The new substation replaced the life expired Prince Alfred Substation, one of the original substations in the Sydney Trains Network. The Chalmers St Substation Project is currently supplying all traction power (needed to run the trains) for all suburban lines from Central to Wynyard, City Circle and the Eastern Suburbs rail. The substation will also supply distribution power for Central Station and all stations around the City Circle and the Eastern Suburbs Rail line.

Hornsby to Berowra

We have upgraded and installed new power poles and wires in and around the rail corridor between Hornsby and Berowra. This required survey and investigation works followed by the installation of the new poles and wires and removal of the old power poles.

Lee Street Substation

We have completed the construction and commissioning of a new substation at Lee Street, west of Central Station. The new substation provides the traction power (needed to run trains) to operate all 15 intercity lines from Central Station to Newtown. The substation has been constructed to cater for power demands, now and into the future.

Gosford South Substation

We have built a new electrical substation at Gosford. The new substation will supply additional power for trains on the Central Coast and Newcastle line.

Granville Junction Substation

We have built a new electrical substation at Railway Parade, north-west of Granville Station. The new substation will supply additional power for trains on the T1 North Shore, Northern and Western Line and on the T2, Inner West and Leppington Line.

Guildford Substation

We have built a new electrical substation at Military Road near Guildford Station. The new substation will supply additional power for trains on the Main Southern Line.

Ingleburn Substation

We have built a new electrical substation south-west of Ingleburn Station. The new substation will supply additional power for trains on the Main Southern Line.

    Minto Substation

We have built a new electrical substation near Minto Station. The new substation will supply additional power to trains on the Main Southern Line.

    Mount Kuring-Gai Sectioning Hut

We have built a new electrical Sectioning Hut at Mount Kuring-Gai to meet expected power requirements for Sydney’s future rail network and new fleet of air-conditioned trains.

Between Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 October 2019 the new Sectioning Hut was installed. Watch the time-lapse video to see the crane lifting the new Sectioning Hut into the rail corridor and our construction crew securing it in place.

    North Eveleigh Project

    Project started October 2015

    Project completed October 2016

We have constructed a new 11kV switching room (needed to change voltage of electricity) to improve power supply at Eveleigh and Redfern.

    Overhead wiring

We have upgraded overhead wires across the network to meet expected power requirements for Sydney’s future rail network and new fleet of air-conditioned trains.

    Penrith Feeder Project

    Project started October 2014

    Project completed October 2015

We have upgraded overhead wires and electrical feeders (needed to transport electricity from one source to another) between the Great Western Highway (near the intersection of Bruce Neale Drive) and The Crescent (near the intersection of King Street) at Penrith.

    Penrith Substation

    Project started October 2014

    Project completed October 2015

We have built a new substation at the former rail maintenance depot near the corner of Castlereagh Road and Jane Street, Penrith. The new substation provides additional power supply (needed to run trains) to the new fleet of air conditioned trains.

Sefton to Chullora and Strathfield to Chullora

We have removed overhead wires and installed new footings, power poles and overhead wires between Sefton and Chullora.

We have also removed and installed power poles between Strathfield and Chullora.

    Strathfield Substation

We have upgraded electrical equipment within the substation at Strathfield Station.

Surry Hills to Central Station Feeder Upgrade

We have installed a new power supply cable between the Ausgrid Substation at Surry Hills and the new Chalmers Street Substation at Central Station. This project supports future rail network requirements associated with the integration of Sydney Metro and the introduction of a new fleet of trains.

The work included the installation of a new 1.2 kilometre underground cable route from the Ausgrid Substation at Surry Hills to the Chalmers Street Substation, via Central Station.

Key features of the upgrade include:

    • Trenching (mostly in the road corridor to avoid trees and existing services) and installation of pipes to house the new cables
    • Boring under Eddy Avenue to minimise traffic, pedestrian and light rail impacts

Work within the rail corridor commenced in June 2019, with construction work in Surry Hills commencing in July 2019 and taking place in stages along the route.

The Sydney Metro project is also completing work in the Central Station and Surry Hills area. Construction updates can be found at the Sydney Metro Central Station website.

    Ultimo

We have performed maintenance work on a high voltage power cable that is located under the road. This power cable is part of the network that supplies power to the rail corridor and rail substation.

    West Ryde Site Compound

The Power Supply Upgrade Program site compound on Ryedale Road, West Ryde has been removed.

Sydney’s future rail network and new fleet of trains need a more robust and reliable power supply.
