Federal Road Safety Program

Reviewed

Project overview

The Australian and NSW Governments are investing more than $600 million to improve safety and reduce crashes on NSW roads. The Federal Road Safety Program was announced in October 2020 as a multi-tranche road safety improvement program aiming to stimulate the economy and recovery during the Covid-19 Pandemic. This was to be matched by state funding at 50:50 rate for urban and 80:20 rate for regional. The program was subsequently extended due to multiple natural disasters and COVID-19 isolation requirements.

Project overview

Transport for NSW and local government have been delivering hundreds of road safety projects across NSW, to protect vulnerable road users, reduce road trauma and save lives. These projects also supported more than 2,500 direct and indirect jobs, as the economy recovered from COVID-19.

Highways and roads have been upgraded through road safety treatments. These include shoulder sealing and the installation of rumble strips (see our video to find out more) that support the safe return of vehicles from the shoulder into the travel lane; physical barriers to prevent run off road crashes; and median treatments to prevent head-on vehicle collisions.

Vulnerable road users, like cyclists and pedestrians, in urban areas will see greater protections through road safety upgrades to include traffic calming and the installation of raised pedestrian crossings.

Safety around schools across NSW has been improved through the installation of around 800 pedestrian facility upgrades both at schools and on routes to schools, including raised pedestrian crossings, pedestrian refuges, kerb expansions, and improved line marking.
