Thurgoona Drive intersection upgrades

Reviewed

Project overview

Transport for NSW is developing design options to improve traffic efficiency and safety at the Hume Highway and Thurgoona Drive intersections.

Oct 2023 - Community consultation report published

Transport for NSW has summarised community feedback received during consultation focused on improved safety and traffic flow through the Hume Highway and Thurgoona Drive Interchange at Albury.

Dual lanes and a path providing better connectivity are some of the key points received in the feedback.

A report summarising the feedback has been published in a community consultation summary report (PDF, 373.34 KB).

Transport is investigating ways to improve traffic flow and road safety at the interchange, which currently experiences congestion and queueing during peak periods.

Community members were earlier this year invited to provide feedback on their experiences using the interchange.
Additional slip and auxiliary lanes, concerns around congestion at key points on the interchange and the connecting local road network were also raised.

Transport will use feedback received from the community consultation to refine and develop the design options for the interchange and is committed to working with the community while developing plans for Albury’s future transport network.

Project information

Background

The Hume Highway through Albury is classified as an inner bypass and separates the Albury CBD from East Albury and Thurgoona.

A number of east-west connections including pedestrian and cyclist overpasses provide connectivity between residents and services east and west of the Hume Highway.

The interchange at Thurgoona Drive currently experiences congestion and queuing in the morning and afternoon peak hours and is anticipated to become more congested as residential and business development in this area increases.

Transport for NSW is in the planning stages of a project to improve traffic efficiency and safety at the Hume Highway and Thurgoona Drive intersections and is developing design options.

Design options are expected to future-proof the intersection for 20 years. To do this, we need to investigate improvements to the current transport network in the area, as well as prepare for future growth.

Community benefits

The Hume Highway and Thurgoona Drive intersection upgrades aim to benefit the community by:

  • supporting economic and residential growth by meeting future transport needs in and around Albury
  • improving safety
  • delivering a high-performing and efficient transport network
  • improving accessibility to transport infrastructure and services for all community members
  • providing a more reliable journey and better-connected transport services in the Albury area.
