Artist Statement
Woven Moments is an abstract expressionistic animation reflecting on our interconnectedness to each other, the land we live on and the space we exist in. This work meditates on moments in time, flowing across multiple dimensions. It is inspired by the quantum physics theory that everything in the universe exists simultaneously in particle and wave states.
Blending traditional and new media, the tactile quality of Woven Moments brings an immersive sense of warmth to the surrounding space. This engagement of viewers through nature’s movements enlivens biophilia: our innate tendency to seek connections with nature.
Moments of calm, punctuated by glimpses of atmospheric spectacle, will surprise and engage the viewer as vivid, textural elements fill the screen. Intricate particles are drawn onto painterly landscapes, creating a cinematic symphony of colour. These intricate visceral forms grow and evolve, accelerate then soften into subtle lingering forms, evoking the feeling of fleeting, ephemeral memory. Known as Heraclitean motion, it is these movements which mimic those found in nature that are associated with safety and tranquility, triggering an automated ‘relaxation response’ in viewers.
As this work challenges screen boundaries to become part of a spatial environment, passersby are immersed, integrated and encouraged to connect with a digital public space: a combination of suspending, compressing and stretching resonates with the interwoven nature of space and time.
Merging the known with the unknown, this work gracefully runs parallels to the architectural theme inspired by the landscape and geology of the Sydney region. Through the journey and motion of Woven Moments, it is our aim to help restore balance and a sense of calm in the tense and frantic environment of a commuter pathway in the central business district. In this simulation of the layered complexity of ecosystems, our sensory systems are engaged to explore, encouraging curiosity through visual fascination.

Artist Biographies
doeanddoe
Co-founded by Beatrice Chew, Su-An Ng and Claudine Michael, doeanddoe is a full service creative content and communications studio. Using design thinking with motion, sound, graphic, and experiential design, the team is fully equipped to bring the seed of an idea to an impactful sensory experience for commercial and independent projects.
doeanddoe’s first collaboration, which won the VizbiPlus Challenge 2015, was a short animation inspired by recent developments in scientific research that would result in early detection of Alzheimer’s disease. Locally, the studio has worked with Cafe Sydney, RealTime, National Association for the Visual Arts, and Intermain. Internationally, its science and health-focused communication pursuits have led to work with the Centre for Blood Research (University of British Columbia) and Arbutus Medical, Vancouver.
doeanddoe is passionate about exploring the collision between art, design and science, and curious about the unlikely pairing of creatives. More broadly, the studio explores the potential of urban screens for Digital Placemaking in contemporary and forward looking perspectives.
Beatrice Chew was awarded a Master of Design, Design Management and Bachelor of Design, Object and Environment by UNSW Australia.
Su-An Ng is an award-winning animation filmmaker and graduate from the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, Canada. Upon completing a Bachelor’s of Media Arts with a major in animation, she was awarded the 2009 Emily Carr University President’s Media Arts Award for her graduation film.
A recognised pipe organist, Claudine Michael was awarded an Honours Degree in Arts by the University of Western Australia, and a Graduate Diploma in music by the Australian Institute of Music.
Michele Morcos
Michele Morcos is a multi-media visual artist with a studio practice in Sydney, Australia. She graduated from UNSW Art & Design (College of Fine Arts) in 1999 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) and BA Honours in Art Theory.
Michele has exhibited her work in seven solo exhibitions and over 20 group exhibitions throughout Australia. She has been selected twice as a finalist for The Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship, and also for major art awards including the Mosman Art Prize.
During the past 10 years, Michele has worked and taught in a number of art galleries, including Object: Australian Design Centre in Sydney. She has also awarded several Artist-in-residence programs in Australia and overseas, including The Milos Studios in Skepolos, Greece (2015).
Michele’s series of drawings entitled The Nocturne 528 was born from her love of abstraction. Inspired by spatiality, quantum physics and movement, the resulting works visualises these ideas with intricate mark-making, a deep understanding of colour theory and multiple layering of textures. Through developing this body of work, Michele continues to explore different methods of visualisation.
Michele’s practice revolves around the idea that we all observe in entirely different ways. She is intrigued by the possibility of a new and alternative ways of viewing what lies around and within us.
