Wollongong Harbour pontoon

Reviewed

Project overview

The NSW Government is delivering major improvements to maritime infrastructure and facilities state-wide, to help the boating and wider community safely access, use and navigate our inland and coastal waters. As part of this strategy, we are planning to build a pontoon in Wollongong Harbour to facilitate more efficient and safer access to boats.

Latest news

May 2023 - Maintenance work

Maintenance work to resurface the car pack from Tuesday 23 May until Tuesday 30 May (weather permitting), will take place between 7.00pm and 5.00am each evening, during which time the car park will be closed. The car park will reopen each day (after 5.00am) and be fully accessible during the day.

April 2023 - Reviewing community feedback

The community consultation on the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) was closed on 27 March. We also received some late submissions which we also incorporated into the process.

The Submissions Report, which reviews the community feedback and announces any changes to the project as a result of feedback received, should be ready by early June. The Report will be published here when completed.

Project information

Project background

This project involves installing a pontoon berth which is to be located near the end of the central pier, and this will provide safe water level access for charter vessels, yachts and recreational craft. The pontoon will be accessed via a fixed platform and gangway and be oriented toward the prevailing seas, which will provide the lowest motions, offering passenger comfort and safety.

Mooring and berthing infrastructure will be developed to reduce fixings and berth furniture attachments on the seawall. The infrastructure comprises piles offset from the seawall, with mooring cleats attached to a steel fender piles which is grouted into the seabed.

Benefits of the work include:

  • improved access to charter vessels, yachts and other recreational craft
  • safer access for marine vessel users
  • enhanced user safety and comfort through design
  • accommodation for projected growth in tourism and users of Belmore Basin
  • more equitable access for users of all mobility levels
  • the creation of a designated area for pick up/drop off and loading/unloading activities.

The work will be completed in two stages:

  • In Stage 1 (the land works) the carpark will be upgraded to include line-marking of existing pavement to provide a permanent unloading zone” for temporary parking to load and unload equipment and stores to and from vessels.
  • In Stage 2 (the waterside work) the work comprises the installation of a 25 metre by five metre public pontoon, with a fixed ramp and four restraint piles, near the end of the central pier to provide safer access for charter vessels, yachts and other recreational craft. The pontoon is to be oriented in line with prevailing wave direction.
