Apprentice and Trainee Programs

Earn while you learn and complete a nationally recognised qualification whilst gaining valuable hands on experience with Transport for NSW!

The Apprentice and Trainee programs offer a great opportunity for you to begin your career in Transport. These programs generally last 2-4 years and allow applicants to grow their skills and knowledge ‘on the job’. 

Our programs

We hire across NSW and offer the following programs;

Business Administration Traineeship

  • 2 year development Program specialising in project support for local projects and managers, with potential ongoing career opportunities
  • Complete a Certificate IV in Business Administration, in your first year, with on-the-job work experience throughout your Program
  • Provide administrative and project assistance to the local managers, and work with your mentor on various projects.

Civil Construction Apprenticeship

  • 3 year development Program specialising in Civil Construction work, with potential ongoing career opportunities
  • Complete a Certificate III in Civil Construction in your first 2 years with on-the-job work experience throughout your Program
  • Your day-to-day will include working in road construction, the maintenance of roads and pavements, performing specialist manual tasks using hand and power tools, working with drainage, concreting and much more

Line Marker Traineeship

  • 2.5 year development Program specialising in the line marking of NSW roads, with potential ongoing career opportunities
  • Complete a Certificate III in Civil Construction (Road Marking) in your first 2 years with on-the-job work experience throughout your Program
  • Working as part of a designated Line Marking Crew, you’ll travel around rural areas to complete a variety of road marking and signage jobs.

Bridge Carpentry Apprenticeship

  • 3 year development Program specialising in bridge carpentry, with potential ongoing career opportunities
  • Complete a Certificate III in Falsework and Formwork in your first 2 years with on-the-job work experience throughout your Program
  • Working as part of a designated regional bridge team, you’ll develop skills in falsework and formwork, work on steel and concrete bridges, as well as work on civil structures.

Heavy Diesel Mechanical Apprenticeship

  • 4 year Trade certified development Program specialising in heavy diesel mechanics, with ongoing potential career opportunities
  • Complete a Certificate III in Automotive Heavy Commercial Vehicle Technology with on-the-job work experience throughout your Program.
  • Working as part of a designated team within a TfNSW workshop, you’ll develop knowledge and experience in the maintenance and repair of trucks, fixed plant and other commercial vehicles

Electrical Apprenticeship

  • 4 year trade certified development Program specialising in electrical trade, with ongoing potential career opportunities
  • Complete a Certificate III in Electro Technology with on-the-job work experience throughout your Program
  • Working as part of a designated team, you’ll learn to install, test and repair electrical systems and work on live projects including signals.

Painting and Blasting Traineeship

  • 3 year development Program specialising in painting and blasting, with ongoing potential career opportunities
  • Complete a Certificate III in Surface Preparation and Coating Application within your first 2 years with on-the-job work experience throughout your Program
  • Working as part of a designated team, you will learn about the processes, materials, tools and equipment used in the painting and maintenance of bridges in regional NSW.
