The Apprentice and Trainee Programs provide a great opportunity for you to kickstart your career at Transport for NSW.

Earn while you learn – get paid while you complete a nationally recognised qualification. Be mentored by industry leaders, gaining valuable hands-on experience on meaningful projects that make a real difference to our communities.

We offer programs ranging from 2-4 years that combine paid work and structured training, allowing applicants to grow their skills and knowledge ‘on the job’ while gaining professional experience.

Our programs

We offer opportunities across NSW, including the following programs:

Bridge Construction & Maintenance Apprenticeship
  • Three-year development program specialising in bridge construction and maintenance. Gain experience in the handling, shaping and placing of timber elements and specialist work on steel and concrete bridges as well as civil structures.
  • Complete a Certificate III in Civil Construction (Bridge Construction and Maintenance).
Business Traineeship
  • Two-year development program specialising in administration. Gain experience providing business support for local projects, managers and teams within an office environment.
  • Complete a Certificate IV in Business.
Civil Construction Apprenticeship
  • Three-year development program specialising in civil construction work and operations. Gain experience in the maintenance and construction of roads and pavements, working with draining, concreting, laying pipes and more, along with developing skills and competencies specialising in the line marking of NSW roads and signage jobs.
  • Complete a Certificate III in Civil Construction (Road Construction & Maintenance).
Electrical Apprenticeship
  • Four-year development program specialising in installation, test and repair of electrical systems and signals. Gain experience working on live projects and systems in the traffic facilities space, with the potential for external rotations to widen your exposure and experience.
  • Complete a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician.
Engineering Technical Traineeship
  • Three-year development program specialising in engineering drafting. Gain experience on all stages of the design process, including conceptual and detailed designs, building skills, and understanding the relationship between manufacturability, safety, sustainability, and reliability in the design process.
  • Complete a Certificate IV in Engineering Drafting.
Finance Traineeship
  • Two-year development program specialising in finance and accounts administration support within an office environment. Gain experience in financial reporting processes and support the business activities of local teams.
  • Complete a Certificate III in Accounts Administration.
Fitter Apprenticeship
  • Four-year development program specialising in maintaining and modifying complex machinery. Gain experience in the assembly, fabrication and, installation processes of mechanical plant and equipment as part of the Sydney Harbour Bridge maintenance team.
  • Complete a Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade (Fitting/Machining).
Heavy Diesel Mechanical Apprenticeship
  • Four-year development program specialising in heavy diesel mechanics. Gain experience in the maintenance and repair of trucks, fixed plant and other commercial vehicles in the road maintenance space.
  • Complete a Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology.
Marketing and Communication Traineeship 
  • Two-year development program specialising in marketing activities. Gain experience providing support in the development and execution of communications and marketing tasks within an office environment.
  • Complete a Certificate IV in Marketing and Communication.
Metal Fabricator Apprenticeship
  • Four-year development program specialising in boilermaking and welding. Gain experience with welding ferrous and other nonferrous metals.
  • Complete a Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade.
Operational Management Systems Traineeship
  • Two-year development program specialising in providing data. Gain experience providing quality support functions on BAU operations and projects across Transport.
  • Complete a Certificate IV in Business.
Painting & Blasting Traineeship
  • Three-year development program specialising in surface preparation and painting. Gain experience working on regional bridges to prepare metal surfaces and apply protective coating finishes.
  • Complete a Certificate III in Surface Preparation & Coating Application.
Painter & Decorator Apprenticeship
  • Four-year development program specialising in surface preparation and painting. Gain experience applying surface coatings to bridge structures and public infrastructure assets as part of the Sydney Harbour Bridge maintenance team.
  • Complete a Certificate III in Painting and Decorating.
Plant Mechanic Apprenticeship
  • Four-year development program specialising in mobile plant machinery. Gain experience carrying out mechanical, hydraulic and auto electrical inspections, servicing and repairs to ensure safe and reliable availability of Transport’s vehicular ferries network.
  • Complete a Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology.
Project Management Traineeship
  • Two-year development program specialising in providing project management support and assistance. Gain experience managing project cycles and project plans to achieve the successful delivery and completion of projects that positively impact the community of NSW.
  • Complete a Certificate IV in Project Management.
