Key facility benefits
The Future Mobility Testing and Research Centre offers benefits for both industry and community including:
- allows industry leads to create and execute complex and sophisticated vehicle test scenarios providing time and cost savings to help accelerate product development
- provides a five-star ANCAP safety testing laboratory for industry
- enables more vehicles to be tested under Australian market conditions instead of overseas market conditions
- Incorporates premier vehicles, equipment and infrastructure into key testing programs
- supports SMEs with automated vehicle policy and the NSW AV trial framework. The AV trial framework enables the approval of CAV trials on the NSW road network through existing legislative pathways. Through the framework we can provide government validated testing and assurance for new CAV technology. This is a unique opportunity for industry to showcase their ability for deployment into other markets.

A legacy in transport, regional development and local community

Since 1959, our site has been a hub for transport and aviation services.
The FMTRC is proudly located on the historic grounds of the former Hazelton airfield, established by aviation pioneer Max Hazelton.
In 2000, Hazelton was listed on the ASX, employing 170 staff across Cudal, Sydney, and Dubbo, and generating $69 million annually.
In 2002, Hazelton merged with Kendell Airlines to become part of the Rex Group. Remarkably, the original Hazelton runway is still in operation at the FMTRC today.
The FMTRC’s commitment to community development remains as strong as ever. We continue to invest in local staff, resources and programs that support community and enhance opportunities in regional NSW.
Plans for growth
The FMTRC is undergoing planning and design to transform the site into a world-class testing facility. Spanning over 130 hectares, the site will soon feature a 4.4 km loop track and a 500m access road to a skid pan, enabling new heavy vehicle testing and more advanced light vehicle testing.
The new track and facilities will support a greater number of testing programs for vehicle manufacturers and key safety authorities, including ANCAP and EURONCAP.
The FMTRC site expansion is an investment in regional NSW and will generate new jobs through construction and on-going roles for testing and operational staff.
