Advanced Bus Technology Trial
The Advanced Bus Technology Trial is accelerating safer and sustainable ways to travel
The Advanced Bus Technology trial is a staged program designed to safely test advanced driver assistance systems and emerging technologies for NSW buses.
Held at the Future Mobility Testing and Research Centre (FMTRC) in Cudal, the trial provides a safe, controlled environment to collect evidence, collaborate with industry, and drive innovation in the future of bus transport.
Key Objectives
The Advanced Bus Technology Trial aims to:
- evaluate the capabilities and limitations of automated bus technology across The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Level 2 to Level 4 automation. This includes driver assistance systems such as automated emergency braking, blind spot detection, parking assist and more
- accelerate the research, development, and adoption of automation in public transport, support industry capability and workforce transition
- ensure automation aligns with the zero emission bus (ZEB) transition, optimising depot operations such as self-parking and automated charging to enhance fleet management and service reliability
- strengthen NSW’s position in transport innovation, leveraging international best practice and local insights to ensure that automation delivers tangible benefits for customers, operators, and the broader transport network.
Status
The Advanced Bus Technology Trial is entering a new phase, and we are now seeking Expression of Interest (EOIs) from industry partners to join us in this innovative project.
Taking place at the FMTRC, we invite you to be part of this trial, whether you’re a supplier of zero-emission buses (ZEBs) or a designer of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
If you are interested in collaborating with us on this unique opportunity, please submit your request here.
EOIs will be open from 29 September 2025 until 24 November 2025.
