Digital Engineering Framework working with Industry

Digital Engineering (DE) is fast becoming one of the most powerful tools to innovate our industry. These new ways of working are enhancing the way projects are delivered, resulting in better project outcomes and rapidly generating efficiencies for both the client and the contractor.

In a 2020 survey of industry stakeholders, 80% of respondents agreed they prefer to deliver with DE, even when there are no DE requirements specified in the contract. 100% of respondents agreed that DE is an essential investment that enhances project outcomes.

As DE techniques continue to evolve, achieving the full potential of DE will be limited if DE requirements are inconsistently specified by the client. Deliverables will remain siloed between projects, lifecycle stages and even project disciplines. That is why Transport is working closely with industry to develop the DE Framework.

A consistent approach

As Transport delivers the largest transport infrastructure program this nation has ever seen, a consistent approach to the way DE services are procured and specified across all Infrastructure and Place projects will deliver a step change for our delivery partners. As the way we work is standardised across the full project lifecycle, some of the benefits for our partners will include:

  • Faster project set up
  • Clearly defined scope and contractual requirements for DE deliverables makes pricing easier
  • Improves stakeholder understanding of project scope
  • Ability to invest in DE automation and further innovate project delivery
  • Improves ability to find, collate and re-use existing project data and assets
  • Multidisciplinary design co-ordination

Project support and implementation

At every stage of the project lifecycle, support is available for contractors working on DE Framework projects, as they adopt a consistent approach to DE. Extensive guidance and support materials are available, including:

  • Standards and guides – our suite of documents, which includes technical guides, tools and templates, support everything from understanding Transport’s operating environment to a DE Execution plan template.
  • Extensive training – a series of DE Framework training modules are available contractors engaged on a DE Framework project enabling them to effectively use the documents available.
  • Transport requirements – a complete suite of schemas and specifications to clearly outline the format and requirements of project deliverables.

The NSW Digital Engineering Services Prequalification Scheme

Transport is now engaging DE services through the NSW Digital Engineering Services Prequalification Scheme.

If you’re looking to make it easier for any Australian Government organisation clients to procure your DE Services, the Scheme is still open and taking submissions. Find out more
