80 km/h speed zone extended on the Castlereagh Highway approaching Mudgee

An 80 km/h speed zone on the Castlereagh Highway will be extended for vehicles travelling to and from Mudgee, in the state’s central west, on the southern edge of the town.

Transport for NSW Regional Director West Alistair Lunn said a speed limit review was conducted after a safety audit prompted concerns about the speed of vehicles approaching town.

“Northbound drivers on the Castlereagh Highway would potentially be travelling at greater-than-expected speeds as they enter Mudgee from the south, which may catch other drivers who are entering or crossing the highway by surprise,” Mr Lunn said.

“To reduce the likelihood of causing a crash, as well as the severity should a crash occur, we are extending the 80 km/h speed zone by 200 metres.

“This will push the 80 km/h speed zone to start about 240 metres south of the Spring Flat Road intersection with the Castlereagh Highway.

“The reduced speed limit will provide more time for those vehicles entering Mudgee to slow down on their approach to the town and the 50 km/h zone.”

The extended 80 km/h speed limit comes into effect Thursday 6 June.

New signage has been installed to alert motorists to the change.
