Barangaroo artwork approved with conditions

Transport for NSW has approved with conditions a development application for the proposed public domain artwork at Watermans Cove in Barangaroo South.

Lendlease Millers Point Pty Ltd sought development consent for the construction of the artwork, which was designed by the artist Mikala Dwyer and consists of five monuments that resemble fishing floats.

The work will be entitled 'Monuments for Fishes'.

The monuments will vary in design and size but have a maximum height of 23 metres above the high-tide line.

The monuments sit atop a pile system that will be installed on part of the seabed of Darling Harbour in Watermans Cove.

Transport for NSW determined the Development Application as consent authority for certain developments in the Foreshore and Waterways Area of Sydney Harbour.

There have been objections to the proposal raising a range of issues, with the main concern being its visual impacts in relation to nearby apartments.

The assessment of the development application included a detailed review by an urban design expert to address concerns about the proposal’s visual impacts.

Transport for NSW sought additional information from Lendlease on a range of considerations, including proposed lighting, and the proposal was revised and reduced in size throughout the course of the assessment.

The artwork will be handed over to Infrastructure NSW upon completion.
