Boaters urged to stay ashore amid severe weather forecast

NSW Maritime is encouraging all waterway users to check conditions and stay ashore if possible, as severe weather moves through parts of the state over the coming days.

NSW Maritime State Coordinator, Damian Logue, said hazardous surf and gale warnings have been issued for Friday between the Macquarie and Illawarra coastlines, and hazardous surf will shift south between the Hunter and Victorian border on Saturday.

“We’re expecting large waves and strong winds along a large section of the coastline and boaters are reminded that if you’re in doubt, don’t go out,” Mr Logue said.

“If you must be on the water, remember to check weather reports both before and during your trip as conditions deteriorate rapidly, and of course remember to always wear a lifejacket.

“Large and powerful surf conditions can cause coastal bars to change quickly and without warning. This can also pose a significant risk to boaters navigating these waters.

“We’d urge everyone to consider the risks before going on the water, remember you’re the skipper, you’re responsible and if conditions aren’t right, make the call to postpone or cancel a trip.

“Very heavy rainfall and flash flooding is forecast which can see debris wash into waterways and form hazards that will still be present after the weather clears.”
