Busy Wollongong intersection receives new safety enhancement

The intersection of Crown and Kembla streets in Wollongong has a new pedestrian safety feature, where priority is given for pedestrians.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said, the signalised junction, located within a 30 and 50 km/h speed zone area, now has ‘dwell on walk’ technology, meaning the traffic signal dwells on green for pedestrians, until a car is detected.

“This technology is a first for Wollongong and will help improve safety for pedestrians using one of the town’s most popular walking intersections connecting to Crown Street Mall,” the spokesperson said.

“As part of the change, a pedestrian approaching the traffic signals will see a green walk signal, and traffic will remain red until a car approaches, and the traffic light will change through its usual phase at that point.

“This means, the busy pedestrian area now may have more time for pedestrians to cross the road and less time waiting for a green walk signal, when cars are not about.

“This technology has been installed to help slow down motorists and allow more time for pedestrians to cross the intersection, coming to or from Crown Street Mall.”

The dwell on walk technology will be activated on Friday 15 December and will operate daily from 11pm to 5am.
