Call for public feedback on Parking Space Levy review

Transport for NSW is calling for feedback on a review of the Parking Space Levy, a scheme aimed at discouraging car use in major Sydney precincts and redirecting funds towards improving public transport.

Transport for NSW Executive Director Customer Strategy and Experience Ed Debenham said the Parking Space Levy (PSL) raises around $100 million per year, with that money going directly towards improving and expanding the public transport system.

“Some of the projects funded by the Parking Space Levy include the CBD South East and Parramatta Light Rail, Sydney Metro, dozens of new or upgraded commuter car parks, public transport information systems and displays, bus interchanges and bike lockers,” Mr Debenham said.

“These projects make it easier, safer and more attractive to leave the car at home and use public transport to get in and out of major precincts like Sydney's CBD.

“Transport for NSW is currently undertaking a comprehensive review of the Parking Space Levy scheme to ensure that it continues to deliver the best outcomes for local communities.

“We’re asking local businesses, parking space owners and commuters how they think the Parking Space Levy should operate as well as how transport projects funded by the levy should be chosen.”

The 2023 Parking Space Levy Regulation discussion paper identified options including:

·      Updating where and how the Parking Space Levy is applied to reflect changes in city developments, levels of congestion, employment density and economic activity.

·      Simplifying the administration processes to reduce costs for organisations paying the levy.

·      Modifying or removing exemptions for retail, unused or unlet car spaces and/or introducing new exemptions for car share or electric vehicle charging spaces.

·      Allocating funds collected to new initiatives such as first/last mile solutions, additional public transport services, mobility access, improved amenities, active transport options and sustainable technologies based on community feedback.
