Charging ahead: new phone Power Spots switch on at three Sydney locations

Public transport patrons and passers-by at Town Hall, Lidcombe, and Bondi Junction stations, as well as the Bondi Junction bus stand, can now power-up their phones for free with new chargers being switched on this week.

Transport for NSW Executive Director for Strategy and Implementation Peta Gamon said the Power Spot charging stations will provide a boost on the go for those who need it.

“So many of us know the stress a flat or dying phone can trigger,” Ms Gamon said.

“Mobile devices are our wallets, maps and travel passes; they keep us entertained and informed while providing a sense of security to those travelling alone or at night.

“We want to continue to make life easier and safer for our passengers, so we’re pleased to announce the rollout of the Power Spot program to more locations.”

Ms Gamon said the feedback Transport for NSW is getting from passengers and station staff about these chargers is overwhelmingly positive and is widely seen as a commonsense solution.

“The success of chargers installed Campbelltown and Liverpool in December has prompted the NSW Government to expand its $1 million Power Spot program to three additional transport hubs, taking the planned total to 18 locations around Sydney while remaining within the existing budget,” Ms Gamon said.

“The sites we’ve already switched on are seeing students, day-trippers, professionals and rough sleepers all take advantage of the free power top-up for their phone, so it’s a win for the entire community.”

Charging stands are expected to be turned on at Hurstville, Central and Wynyard stations in the coming months, with Bankstown, Blacktown, Chatswood, Epping, Parramatta, Penrith and Strathfield to follow later in the year.

Installation of Power Spot chargers is also on the agenda for Sydenham, Redfern and Hornsby stations.

Where possible, Power Spot chargers will be installed outside ticketed areas to ensure they are accessible to anyone in the community at any time of the day or night.

Designed and built in Sydney, these charging stands offer a mix of wireless, USB-A and UBC-C options, and can provide power for up to seven devices at once.

The Power Spots Program is funded through the NSW Government’s $800 million commitment under the new Safe Accessible Transport program.
