Future of vehicle testing a step closer for Central West site

A major expansion of Australia’s premier government-operated vehicle safety testing and research site has hit a new milestone – with the community asked to have their say for the Cudal site.

Transport for NSW Director Future Mobility Evan Walker said they are seeking feedback on the concept designs and Review of Environmental Factors (REF) for the Future Mobility Testing and Research Centre Upgrade.

“Last year we announced our vision for a $30 million expansion, including a new closed-loop test track, about four kilometres in length. Now we’re excited to show the details of what’s coming and gather valuable community and industry feedback,” Mr Walker said.

“The new track will allow our team to expand our testing offering across advanced driver safety features to heavy vehicles and into higher speed scenarios.

“Along with the track, we’re seeking feedback on upgraded access roads, as well as the potential future development of new workshops for our Transport teams and clients and new onsite buildings and facilities.”

Transport has purchased 100 hectares of farmland next to the Cudal facility, which sits on the former Hazelton Airport site, to accommodate the substantial expansion.

The REF outlines the features of the concept design of the proposal and assesses a range of potential environmental impacts expected during construction and operation.

The community is invited to provide feedback on the REF from 21 July to 18 August 2025.

The project team will be available to answer questions during the display period with drop-in sessions to be held at Cudal Community Hall and Orange Ex-Services Club.

Feedback can be provided online at haveyoursay.transport.nsw.gov.au/fmtrc.

Drop-in session times:

  • Cudal Community Hall Wednesday 6 August -12pm to 3pm, Friday 8 August - 3pm to 6pm Saturday 9 August 8am to 1pm.
  • The Greenhouse Function Room, Orange Ex-Services Club Thursday 7 August 6pm to 8pm.
