Gwydir Highway improvement and repair work paves way for safer journeys west of Moree

Motorists will benefit from safer, smoother and more reliable journeys on the Gwydir Highway west of Moree with the first section of improvement work now completed.
The NSW Government provided $2.4 million to upgrade a section of the highway near Browns Creek to increase safety and network resilience.
The work, carried out by Transport for NSW, included widening the road and upgrading two kilometres of pavement as well as repairs to five culverts.
Transport for NSW Acting Regional Director West Holly Davies said these improvements were a win for motorists, visitors and freight operators who rely on this key east-west link.
“Safety on NSW roads is our number one priority and the work completed on the Gwydir Highway delivers improvements where they’re most needed,” Ms Davies said.
“Crews only stopped for seven days due to wet weather since the work started in March and they’ve done a fantastic job getting the work completed on schedule.
“Widening and upgrading the pavement ensures a much smoother and safer trip for motorists.
“The drainage improvements will allow the highway to better cope with heavy rain and flooding events, reducing closure times and traffic impacts which means we can keep locals, tourists and freight operators moving.
“Further to this, the work will reduce maintenance and repair costs and the subsequent delays for motorists who travel on this corridor every day.
“Road users travel long distances in regional NSW and important upgrades such as this help to ensure they make it safely to their destination.”
Further upgrades and repair work will take place at this location later this year. The exact dates for this work, and traffic impacts, will be shared with the community as the program of work is confirmed.
