Halfway mark in sight for Moss Vale Road repairs

Repairs to landslip damage on Moss Vale Road at Barrengarry and Cambewarra mountains are nearing the halfway mark (PDF, 169.68 KB), as Transport for NSW takes advantage of a routine maintenance closure to carry out work on two of the 26 remaining landslip sites.

The Minns Labor Government’s Duty MLC for the Kiama electorate Dr Sarah Kaine said Moss Vale Road is set to be closed for five nights from Sunday 22 October between Myra Vale Road and Paddington Lane on Barrengarry Mountain while work is carried out to maintain vegetation, clear drains and repair guardrails.

“Crews will also take advantage of this routine maintenance window to carry out investigative geotechnical drilling and long reach excavator work on some of the remaining landslip sites,” Dr Kaine said.

“Since record-breaking rainfall in 2022 caused extensive landslip damage on Moss Vale Road, the Transport team have completed repairs at 24 of the 50 sites.

“It is a credit to the local community and motorists who have been so patient throughout the work, and to the crews who combined have clocked up more than 130,000 hours already with the firm goal to bring back the road better and more resilient than before.”

Dr Kaine said extensive work was still needed to completely repair Moss Vale Road and, while this latest work will be carried out on Barrengarry Mountain, planning is continuing for the next stage of work needed to restore full traffic access on Cambewarra Mountain.

“A plan for the next stage of work to restore full traffic access on Cambewarra Mountain is in the procurement stage so we hope to be able to provide an update including a timeline for the work in coming months,” Dr Kaine said.

“In the meantime, crews are taking every opportunity to complete repairs as soon as possible and this relies largely on availability of specialist contractors who are in high demand across the state.

“The damage caused by last year’s unprecedented rain was extensive and far reaching across NSW.

“We remain committed to delivering a stronger and safer road to the Kangaroo Valley community and motorists who regularly use Moss Vale Road and have felt the impacts of the severe weather events of March and July last year the most.”

Transport for NSW has advised Moss Vale Road between Myra Vale Road and Paddington Lane on Barrengarry Mountain will be closed between 8pm to 4am for five nights from 8pm on Sunday 22 October to 4am Friday 27 October.

Detours for all vehicles will be in place via the Illawarra Highway, Macquarie Pass and the Princes Highway.

Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, follow the directions of signs and traffic control and allow 80 minutes additional travel time.
