Improved speed zone consistency in place for Narromine

The speed limit for all vehicles approaching Narromine on The McGrane Way has been made a consistent 80 km/h to improve safety and remove confusion for all road users.

Transport for NSW conducted a speed zone review along a 1.76-kilometre section of The McGrane Way on the south-west approach to Narromine due to concerns over the number of different speed zones in the area.

Transport for NSW Regional Director West Alistair Lunn said the review assessed a number of factors including location, crash history, road environment, the number of access points, road usage, traffic mix and traffic volumes, and recommended a consistent 80 km/h along the entire section.

“The 1.76-kilometre section of The McGrane Way reviewed by Transport for NSW passes two grain storage facilities which make it a very busy road in the harvest season,” Mr Lunn said.

“Some years ago, a 660-metre long 60 km/h speed limit was introduced to address safety concerns due to heavy vehicles being forced to queue in the road corridor as they waited to use the sampling stand at Agrigrain.

“That sampling stand has now been moved inside the property boundary so there is no need to queue outside and the 60 km/h zone is no longer suitable.

“Further, the existing 100 km/h zone between the 60 km/h zone passing the storage facilities and the 50 km/h zone at the entrance to Narromine is just 1.1 kilometres long, well below the desired minimum outlined in the NSW Speed Zoning Guidelines.

“Accordingly, a new 80 km/h zone has been installed along the 1.76 kilometres of The McGrane Way covered by the review, for the benefit of all road users. The change will not impact travel times along this section of road.”

New signage has been installed and the new 80 km/h speed limit is now in effect.
