Motorists and pedestrians will soon experience a safer journey in Queanbeyan, with improvement work set to start at the roundabout intersection of Yass Road, Bungendore Road, and Ellerton Drive (PDF, 96.19 KB).

Minister for Skills, TAFE, and Tertiary Education, and Member for Monaro, Steve Whan said work to improve pedestrian safety and traffic efficiency at the intersection of the three roads would be carried out early in the new year.

"Transport for NSW have advised that a pedestrian refuge will be installed on Bungendore Road and a two-lane approach to the roundabout from Ellerton Drive will also be built", Mr Whan said.

"The Minns Labor Government is currently working on a major upgrade of this intersection, however in the short term, are committed to improving safety and efficiency which is why this work is starting now."

Thanks to the government's new Regional Roads Fund, $19 million has been earmarked for a future major upgrade of the intersection of Yass, Bungendore, and Ellerton roads.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison said the short-term improvement would make the intersection safer now and allow for its transformation to a signalised intersection in the future.

"New traffic lights are planned for the long-term and they will improve safety and efficiency for all road users," Minister Aitchison said.

"In the new year, community members will be invited to review the proposed long-term upgrade plans and provide feedback.

"The community will be kept informed as the project progresses."
