Last stage of road safety improvements on Great Western Highway at Bowenfels

Work is under way to deliver the final stage of safety improvements for motorists travelling on the Great Western Highway at Bowenfels.

Bathurst MP Paul Toole said the NSW Government is investing more than $900,000 to improve the condition of the road surface and install barriers and curve signage between Lockyer Street and Cooerwull Road.

“Work to reduce the slipperiness of the road in wet weather was completed in June last year and the installation of curve signage and a safety barrier in the grassed median is now under way,” Mr Toole said.

“The guard rail will protect vehicles from running off the road and colliding with the trees along the median and oncoming traffic. Improvements will also be made to a large concrete drain which will help water run off the road more quickly, providing a safer road surface for motorists.

“In the five years to 2015, 10 crashes were reported with 14 people injured in the area of the upgrade.”

Work will be carried out from Monday to Saturday between 7am and 6pm, weather permitting, from Monday 4 March with expected completion in late March.

Changed traffic conditions will be in place during work hours including single lane closures closest to where the work is being carried out.

Motorists should plan their trip, allow extra travel time and follow the direction of signs and traffic control. A reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists.
