Lower speed limit on Saleyards Lane for safer trips through Mudgee

Motorists are advised that the speed limit for all vehicles travelling on Saleyards Lane north of Mudgee will be reduced to 60 km/h for the safety of all road users.
Transport for NSW conducted a speed zone review of Saleyards Lane from the intersection with the Castlereagh Highway following requests from Mid-Western Council and local community members who were concerned about the safety impacts of ongoing development in the area.
Transport for NSW Regional Director West Alistair Lunn said the review assessed a number of factors including location, crash history, road environment, the number of access points, road usage, traffic mix and traffic volumes and recommended a speed reduction for all users.
“Saleyards Lane currently has a speed limit of 80 km/h for 600 metres from the intersection with the Castlereagh Highway and then 50 km/h as it approaches and passes through Mudgee,” Mr Lunn said.
“There has been significant residential development along Saleyards Lane in recent years and several roadside hazards are present, including table drains, pipe culvert headwalls and reduced road width.
“The review considered all these factors and determined the 600-metre long 80 km/h speed limit from the intersection with Castlereagh Highway should be reduced to 60 km/h and extended a further 100 metres into the existing 50 km/h speed limit zone.
“The speed limit changes will add about eight seconds to the average journey through Mudgee, a minor change that will not adversely impact commuter or tourist trips through the town.”
The reduced speed limit will come into effect on Wednesday 14 February and new roadside signage will be installed to advise motorists of the change.
