M6 STAGE 1 SURFACE WORK TO CONTINUE

Published
Work to complete the transformation of President Avenue in Kogarah and the revitalised parklands and shared pathways for the community to enjoy will continue after an agreement was reached with the M6 Stage 1 contractor.

The project’s design and construct contractor CGU, which comprises CPB Contractors, Ghella, and UGL, will complete these surface works in Kogarah and Rockdale.

This includes finishing road works on President Avenue, Princes Highway and surrounding streets, completing the majority of the five kilometres of shared pedestrian and cyclist pathways, and revitalising some of the surrounding public parklands. This work is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Transport has also reached agreement where CGU will continue to maintain the security and safety of the tunnels and tunnelling construction sites for the next three months while technical and commercial assessments continue.

The agreement with CGU to complete surface work will be funded from within the project budget of $3.1 billion.

The project is very well progressed, with nearly 90 per cent of the M6 tunnels excavated and close to half of the road pavement laid. The excavated tunnel is safe and the area of subsidence is stable.

The shared pathway through Scarborough Park, surrounded by new vegetation and revived wetlands, is well advanced and on track to be the first section of the active transport corridor to be completed by the end of the year.

Transport will continue to keep the community updated on the status of the project.

Transport for NSW Secretary, Josh Murray said:

“We have reached an agreement for surface works to be completed on the M6 Stage 1 this year, and to be progressed separately to the underground challenges.

“The local community deserves certainty. Finishing these areas will be treated as a priority, including surface roadworks, new walking and cycling links and parklands.

“This agreement will also allow Transport to continue work on a solution that will lead to tunnelling being completed, while the contractor continues to play its role in securing the construction site.”

Transport for NSW Deputy Secretary, Infrastructure Projects & Engineering, Camilla Drover said:

“Completing the surface road works on President Avenue, Princes Highway and local streets in Kogarah is a priority to minimise any further disruption to the community, who have endured construction on the project for almost three years.

“Strong progress has been made on the new shared pedestrian and cyclist pathways, which will connect all the way from Kogarah and Brighton-Le-Sands including the bridge over President Avenue.

“We look forward to delivering these surface works for the community by the end of the year. Transport will continue to keep the community updated as work progresses, and we thank the community for their patience during this time.”

CPB Contractors Executive Project Director Terry Sleiman said

“We appreciate the community’s patience throughout the construction of the M6 Stage 1 and are pleased to have reached a new agreement with Transport to complete the surface works.

“This phase is a vital part of the project, as it delivers tangible benefits to the community including safer roads, new walking and cycling paths, as well as revitalised green spaces.”
