Major road closures for City2Surf fun run on Sunday

Major roads will close and strict parking restrictions will be in force between the Sydney CBD and Bondi Beach for the world’s largest fun run.

Transport for NSW Acting Chief Operations Officer Craig Moran said from 3.30am Sunday, roads will start closing around the Hyde Park starting line in the Sydney CBD, followed by major road closures in the eastern suburbs from 6am, with most closures in place by 7am.

“We advise motorists to avoid unnecessary travel through the eastern suburbs or expect significant delays and allow plenty of extra travel time, as traffic will be heavy while closures and detours are in place,” Mr Moran said.

“Motorists are also urged to avoid Bondi Road because hundreds of buses will carry tens of thousands of participants between Bondi Beach and Bondi Junction throughout the day.”

From 1am Sunday, special event clearways will be in effect along the entire 14-kilometre course, as well as on Bondi Road, to clear the course of vehicles for participant safety and to keep traffic and buses moving along detour routes.

“These clearways are strict no-parking zones for all vehicles so make sure you check signs if you park on Sunday and especially if you leave your car overnight between Saturday and Sunday, because vehicles left in clearways will be towed and a fee will apply,” Mr Moran said.

Roads will start reopening in the city from 11:30am and in the eastern suburbs from 1pm. All roads are expected to reopen by 4pm.

Mr Moran said public transport was the best option for participants to get to and from the event, with plenty of services available.

“We urge all City2Surf participants and volunteers to catch public transport because travel on all modes of public transport is included with event registration – just show your race bib or t-shirt to transport staff when boarding services,” Mr Moran said.

“We’ll have extra trains, buses and light rail services, as well as frequent shuttle buses from Bondi Beach to Bondi Junction to help you get home from the finish line.”

The first group of participants are scheduled to start from 7:40am, with the last runners expected to cross the finish line around 2pm.
Bus customers are reminded that while major roads will close along the course, significant diversions will be in place for bus routes between the city and eastern suburbs – so, plan ahead before heading out.

Weekend trackwork on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 August on T2 Inner West & Leppington Line and T5 Cumberland Line will see buses replacing trains between Cabramatta and Granville. There is no major planned trackwork that will affect participants travelling to and from the city and Bondi.
