Never before released number plates to go under the hammer

Thirty never-before-released number plates are up for grabs, with Transport for NSW partnering with Lawsons Auctioneers to put them under the hammer.

Transport for NSW Senior Manager of Commercial Barry Newling said it is the first time special European style number plates have been made available to the public for almost two decades, and demand is high - with online bidding already surpassing expectations.

“We’re delighted people are jumping at this rare opportunity to get their hands on a unique collector's item. These sleek black plates are a sophisticated and extremely limited addition to any prized vehicle,” Mr Newling said.

“The plates are based on a European design, with a distinct New South Wales identity - including our state flower, the waratah, and the letter N for NSW.

“Plate N11 has already received more than 70 bids and is currently sitting at over $170,000. Typically, it’s the lower numbers that attract in the highest bids, but for some it’s all about making an individual plate statement.

“Number and letter combinations have different meanings for different people. Some are drawn to low, lucky, and symmetrical numbers, others are attracted to birth years and car model references.

“This is a not only a great opportunity to circulate some very rare number plates, but to also help fund important projects which benefit communities around the state.”

The reserve for the 30 plates up for auction ranges between $10,000 and $30,000, with the revenue reinvested into Transport for NSW initiatives.

Lawsons Managing Director Martin Farrah said the plates are black with white characters, have between two to four numerals and are all prefixed by a single N.

“The last time we auctioned the Euro Numeral category plates was in 2006, with the N2 plate fetching $70,000, N888 went for $51,000 and N6 for $42,000,” Mr Farrah said.

“The reserve for this style of plate is far lower than a numeral only plate, so it’s a good chance for enthusiasts to enter the market.

“These plates are already proving popular in online bidding. We encourage anyone with an interest in cars or plates to get involved.”
