New overtaking lane in use between Dubbo and Narromine

A $32 million project to make the Mitchell Highway safer and more efficient between Dubbo and Narromine in the state’s central west is making great progress towards completion.

Transport for NSW Regional Director West Alistair Lunn said two of the three new overtaking lanes being installed along the 36-kilometre stretch are now complete, with Wynsley Lane open to traffic.

“Having the Wynsley Lane overtaking lane in use means all road users can travel more efficiently while we continue work on this important upgrade,” Mr Lunn said.

“Work is well underway on the third and final overtaking lane at Mylangra, heading from Narromine towards Dubbo, and we expect that to be completed early in the new year, weather permitting.

“While these overtaking lanes are a significant aspect of this project, we’re also doing other improvements including road widening, a one-metre-wide centreline and safety barriers.

“Intersection upgrades at Wynsley Lane and Lagoon Creek are complete, and rehabilitation works near Mylangra are expected to be finished by mid next year, marking the overall project completion.”

Traffic heading from Dubbo to Narromine will be able to use the Lagoon Creek overtaking lane located 20 kilometres from Dubbo, in early 2024, weather permitting.

While complete, the opening of the Lagoon Creek overtaking lane to traffic has been delayed as part of Transport’s traffic management plan for the construction of the Mylangra overtaking lane.

Traffic heading from Dubbo to Narromine is now using the Wynsley Lane overtaking lane, which is about 10 kilometres east of Narromine.

The final of the three overtaking lanes, 25 kilometres west of Dubbo at Mylangra, is still under construction and will provide improved passing opportunities for motorists travelling east from Narromine.

“We have been working hard to minimise impacts to road users while this important project is underway,” Mr Lunn said.

“At the Wynsley Lane site, for example, we moved traffic onto temporary pavement in March this year to allow traffic to flow in both directions while we continued our safety upgrades.

“Once complete, the Mitchell Highway, Dubbo to Narromine project will provide safer and more efficient travel for all motorists.”
