Next stage of repair work to start on Barrengarry Mountain
The next stage of natural disaster repair work on Moss Vale Road at Barrengarry Mountain is set to begin next week, as major repairs continue towards restoring full traffic access at Cambewarra Mountain.
The Australian and NSW governments are funding the $1.2 million project through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
Transport for NSW Regional Director South, Cassandra Ffrench, said crews will start work on Monday 19 August 2024 on two of the 10 remaining landslip sites on Barrengarry Mountain, caused by record-breaking rainfall in 2022.
“Work has already been completed at 15 natural disaster sites on Barrengarry Mountain since the weather events in 2022, including emergency work to repair a 50-metre section of the road that was closed for several months due to significant landslip damage,” Ms Ffrench said.
Ms Ffrench said work on these next two sites, the first located at the first hairpin bend at the top of Barrengarry Mountain and the second less than 150 metres east of the Barrengarry Mountain Eastbound Rest Area, will be carried out by specialist contractors who will install soil nails and heavy-duty mesh surfacing or shotcrete to reinforce and stabilise the slope in this area.
“This work will have minimal impacts to motorists, with the road limited to a single lane at the work sites under stop/slow traffic control and a reduced speed limit,” Ms Ffrench said.
“Temporary traffic changes will be in place during the day between 7am and 5pm from Monday 19 August for eight weeks, weather permitting. Work is expected to take three to four weeks at each site.
“We urge motorists to drive to the conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic control and allow an additional five minutes of travel time.”
Concurrently, work to repair six sites on Moss Vale Road at Cambewarra Mountain continues to progress. Moss Vale Road at Cambewarra Mountain will continue to be closed to traffic while work is carried out at night between 7pm and 5am Sunday to Thursday, when traffic volumes are lower.
Detours already in place for this major work will continue for light vehicles via Kangaroo Valley Road, requiring an additional 25 minutes of travel time. Vehicles longer than 7.5 metres or heavier than 12 tonne GVM can detour via the Illawarra Highway and Princes Highway, adding 90 minutes travel time.
The community will be kept updated as this work continues.
