Reduced speed limit for Illawarra Highway at Albion Park

Motorists will soon experience safer journeys on Illawarra Highway at Albion Park, with the speed limit set to be reduced next week.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said, from Monday 19 February, the speed limit will drop from 60 km/h to 50 km/h for a one kilometre stretch along the highway.

“The review of this speed zone was initiated in response to a request from the community to provide a safer road environment for pedestrians,” the spokesperson said.

“For the five year period up to July 2023 there were 13 crashes on this stretch of road, including a fatal crash involving a pedestrian and three serious injury crashes.

“Reducing the speed limit to 50 km/h is appropriate for the road environment and will improve the safety of all road users.

“Speeding is the biggest contributor to road trauma in NSW so it’s important that motorists are aware of the changed speed limit and follow the road rules.

“In NSW, speeding contributes to 40 per cent of road fatalities and 24 per cent of serious injuries from road crashes each year.

“Speeding increases both the risk of a crash happening, as well as the likelihood of death or serious injury.”

Message boards will be onsite one week prior and one week following the speed zone reduction, to notify motorists of the changed speed limit.
