Safety improvements on the way for Tumbarumba and Little Billabong roads
An $8 million suite of safety improvements is on the way for Tumbarumba and Little Billabong roads (PDF, 130.82 KB) in the State’s south west.
This project is being delivered as part of the Australian and NSW Governments’ Road Safety Program, which aims to improve road safety by minimising the occurrence of severe injuries and fatalities, with a focus on vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists.
Transport for NSW Regional Director South Cassandra Ffrench said work will kick off on Monday 10 February with the installation of safety barriers at various locations on Tumbarumba Road from the Little Billabong Road intersection to the Jingellic-Gilmore Road intersection – a total distance of about 60 kilometres.
“Tumbarumba Road is a regional road with long winding sections and heavy roadside vegetation in parts so these upgrades will go a long way to improving safety for all who use it,” Ms Ffrench said.
“Up to 16 kilometres of safety barriers in total will be installed at locations where there is a high risk of running off the road to improve safety and reduce the risk and severity of crashes.
“Following this, further improvements will include the installation of audio tactile line marking, also known as rumble strips, signage upgrades and enhanced centre lines.”
A route safety review was carried out on Little Billabong and Tumbarumba roads to identify safety issues and to bring the road up to a consistent safety standard.
Between 2019 and 2024 a total of 12 crashes were recorded on the route, including two fatalities.
Work to install the barriers will be carried out weekdays from 7am to 6pm from Monday 10 February and is expected to be completed by the end of March, weather permitting.
Single lane closures and reduced speed limits of 40 km/h will be in place for the safety of road users and workers.
Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.
