Safety upgrades on the Federal Highway at Wollogorang
21 April 2022
Motorists will soon experience a safer drive southbound on the Federal Highway at Wollogorang following the announcement of $2.3 million of NSW Government funding for safety upgrades along a notorious stretch of road.
A Transport for NSW spokesperson said work would be carried out on two curves about three kilometres apart, starting about six kilometres south of the intersection with the Hume Highway.
“The crash rate for this stretch of highway is significant in comparison with other four lane highways in NSW,” the spokesperson said.
“Between 2013 and 2018 there were 17 crashes and 22 casualties along this stretch of road.
“Twelve of these crashes involved vehicles travelling south and two were fatalities as a result of run-off-road crashes.
“This project is about improving the safety of motorists on the Federal Highway.
“Safety treatments include installation of roadside safety barriers at both curves to prevent run-off-road crashes, road resurfacing, pavement work to better align the shape of the road and road shoulder widening.”
Work will be carried from Wednesday 27 April for about six weeks, weather permitting.
Work will be carried out between 7am and 11pm Monday to Friday, and between 7am and 5pm on Saturdays. The southbound carriageway of the Federal Highway, from 200 metres north of Wollogorang Creek Bridge to one kilometre south of Stillwater Road, will be closed during the work.
Southbound traffic will be diverted onto the northbound carriageway during the work. Property access will be maintained at all times.
A reduced speed of 40 km/h and single lane closures will be in place for the safety of workers and motorists.
Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, allow extra travel time, and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.
Transport for NSW thanks the community for their patience during this time.
