Speed limit changes for Barwon electorate level crossings

Published
Drivers have been warned to slow down at four rail level crossings in the Barwon electorate with reduced speed limits to come into effect from Friday 24 June.

The reduced speed limits are part of a NSW Government campaign to improve safety at level crossings through the railway Level Crossing (RLX) Speed Reduction Program.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said the changes had been recommended by Transport for NSW following a period of consultation and had been supported by the NSW Level Crossing Strategy Council.

“The speed limit on the approaches and exits at two level crossings on the Castlereagh Highway and one each on Black Stump Way and Warrumbungles Way will be reduced from 100 km/h to 80 km/h for the safety of all road and rail users,” the spokesperson said.

“Crash statistics show that from 2008 to 2021 there were 83 collisions between trains and cars at level crossings in NSW and, sadly, 10 people lost their lives.

“We’re doing all we can to prevent those crashes in future.”

Reduced 80 km/h speed limits are coming into effect on Friday 24 June at:

  • The level crossing 700 metres north of Dunedoo on the Castlereagh Highway.
  • The level crossing about eight kilometres north of Dunedoo on the Castlereagh Highway.
  • The level crossing on the Black Stump Way, Connemarra, north of Coolah.
  • The level crossing at Binnaway on the Warrumbungles Way. Further, this reduced speed limit section has been extended for 2.6 kilometres to accommodate traffic coming to and from the waste depot.

In addition, a reduced speed limit of 80 km/h is already in place at the level crossing at Gulargambone Road, Gulargambone.

“New signage will be in place to advise motorists of the changes,” the spokesperson said.

“Motorists are advised to slow down in the areas and follow the directions of signs.”
