Speed limit changes on Burrendong Way for safer trips near Mumbil and Stuart Town

Motorists are advised that new speed limits will be introduced on two sections of Burrendong Way in the state’s west for the safety of all road users.
Transport for NSW conducted speed zone reviews of Burrendong Way on the northern approach to Stuart Town and near the level crossing on the southern approach to Mumbil to determine if the existing speed limits were appropriate.
Transport for NSW Regional Director West Alistair Lunn said the review at Stuart Town assessed a number of factors including location, crash history, road environment, the number of access points, road usage, traffic mix and traffic volumes and recommended a speed limit reduction for all users.
“The speed limit review followed requests from Stuart Town residents and Dubbo City Council, who were concerned that existing 80 km/h limit was not appropriate through a large, sweeping curve in the road,” Mr Lunn said.
“They also expressed concerns about limited sight lines for residents entering Burrendong Way from a number of driveways on the curve.
“The review considered all these factors and determined that the speed limit for all vehicles should be reduced from 80 km/h to 60 km/h from 420 metres north of Bell Street to 1020 metres north of Bell Street.”
Mr Lunn said the speed limit review at the Mumbil level crossing was part of a NSW Government campaign to improve safety at level crossings across regional NSW through the Railway Level Crossing (RLX) Speed Reduction Program.
“An 80 km/h limit was introduced in 2018 and while there have been no serious crashes since, it was noted that that the guard rails on the tight curves approaching the level crossing have been hit a number of times,” Mr Lunn said.
“As a result of the review and in recognition of the community concerns, it’s been determined that the speed limit on Burrendong Way approaching the level crossing will be reduced from 80 km/h to 60 km/h in both directions.”
The new speed limits will come into effect on Monday 18 December and new roadside signage will be installed to advise motorists of the changes.
