Update on closure of Rozelle Parklands

Published

Targeted testing of the Rozelle Parklands and associated sites has now been completed by independent contamination and remediation experts engaged by Transport for NSW, with one of seven outstanding tests returning a positive result for bonded asbestos today.

This site is a garden bed adjacent to the road and active transport path near the junction of the Anzac Bridge and Victoria Road.

This site was part of the same landscaping work done in the same time period as other sites that have returned positive results. This was done near the end of 2023 prior to the final site audit and the opening of the park.

In total, more than 92 samples from Rozelle Parklands and surrounding sites related to the Rozelle Interchange Project have now been analysed with a total of 14 positive results showing traces of bonded asbestos - which is considered to be low risk compared to friable asbestos.

Most active transport links within the park have reopened to ensure the community can get to where they need to go, while all mulched areas within the park remain fenced off at this time. Air monitoring is also continuing at the park.

Transport for NSW and John Holland CPB Joint Venture are working through the clean-up notice issued by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA). The contractor will provide TfNSW a remediation plan that addresses this in the coming days.

That plan will then be worked through with the EPA, including sourcing mulch and resources to carry out the work.

We thank the community for their patience and understanding and will update them on next steps as soon as possible.
