Virtual Reality training to deliver safer reality

A new virtual reality solution to educate 3000 train drivers and guards is being rolled out to improve their readiness to respond to onboard emergencies.

Sydney Trains Executive Director Train Crewing Hayden Donoghue said the innovative Transport for NSW training marks the first-time virtual reality (VR) has been leveraged for training to this scale.

“It simulates a range of scenarios inside the carriage of Waratah trains which prompts trainees to practise a variety of emergency procedures,” Mr Donoghue said.

“From deploying an emergency ramp for evacuation to using the fire extinguisher to douse a flame – it is crucial that train staff are confident in their ability to undertake these activities should the need ever arise.

“The training is run through VR headsets in a classroom environment which can also be viewed through an iPad or laptop – making it efficient and easy to use.”

The VR learning is a huge leap forward from the video learning that was previously used to train the crews and highlights how Transport continues to embrace the use of technology to create safety and efficiency solutions that benefit passengers now and into the future.

Transport for NSW Executive Director Strategy and Engagement Sherrie Killiby said new training coincides with the release of the Transport Technology Strategy which outlines Transport’s vision for a transport network underpinned by superior technology.

“Technology is transforming the world, which is why we have launched the Transport Technology Strategy. It outlines our vision to deliver a world-class transport network that harnesses the best technology has to offer,” Ms Killiby said.

“This new virtual reality training is an example of how we’re making sure that our Transport workforce have the tools they need to do their work and deliver a responsive and resilient transport network that the people of NSW deserve.

“We are always looking for new ways to help make trips faster, easier, safer and more reliable and technology is key to this.”
