WOLLONGONG CHARGES AHEAD WITH ELECTRIC EVOLUTION

Wollongong, the city with the highest electric vehicle (EV) uptake outside Sydney, has moved into the EV charging fast lane with its first high power charging station.

Transport for NSW Executive Director Emerging Technologies Evan Walker said drivers in Wollongong had been crying out for EV chargers and the opening of the first two, in partnership with NRMA, marked a significant milestone.

“The NSW Government’s goal is to make NSW the best place in Australia to own and drive an EV and a huge part of that is building the infrastructure to make that a reality,” Mr Walker said.

“Wollongong’s EV uptake has been incredible so it’s wonderful to be able to install and operate these two fast chargers, one of which is a 150kW super-fast charger that can fully charge an EV in 15 minutes.

“We commend the city of Wollongong for their forward-thinking attitudes that are good for the planet and good for the hip pocket.”

Located on Stewart Street, the Wollongong site conveniently connects with other fast chargers in Berry and Batemans Bay in the south and Picton and Mittagong in the southern highlands.

NRMA Energy CEO Carly Irving-Dolan said the organisation was pleased to announce Wollongong as the location of its first high-powered charging site.

“The NRMA is focused on delivering reliability and performance throughout its EV Charging Network. These new designs ensure more capacity, meaning all models of EVs will have fit-for-purpose charging facilities available,” Ms Irving-Dolan said.

“Wollongong is located in a key strategic corridor for people heading to the Illawarra, South Coast and beyond so EV drivers can now comfortably plan their road trips to incorporate this new high-powered site. The NRMA will upgrade this site as demand increases making sure drivers’ needs are met.”

Six more fast chargers will be installed in Wollongong over the next two years as part of the NSW Government’s $149 million Fast Charging Grants.

Transport for NSW and the NRMA have partnered on installing over 20 regional charging sites across NSW.
