Newcastle Interchange racing ahead

Newcastle’s new multi-modal transport interchange will be welcoming its first customers in time for fans to come to town for the V8 Supercars event later this year.

Tens of thousands of fans, both from the surrounding suburbs and out of town, are expected to head into the Newcastle CBD for the inaugural Newcastle 500 and the modern Newcastle Interchange will be a hub of activity. 

“Customers will be able to connect with trains, buses and taxis at the new Newcastle Interchange, the bus and ferry timetables will be overhauled in 2018, and light rail services are set to start in 2019,” said Revitalising Newcastle Director Michael Cassel when discussing transport improvements in Newcastle.

The Interchange project includes new train stabling and turnback facilities to the east of Hamilton Station, signalling work at Wickham, Hamilton and Broadmeadow, track work, a new pedestrian bridge and new staff facilities.

The $200 million dollar Newcastle Interchange project is part of a broad program of work being delivered by Revitalising Newcastle and Novocastrians are excited for the city’s future.

Light rail is also coming to town and locals will be able to enjoy activation activities on Hunter and Scott streets while light rail is under construction to help bring people into the city centre.

It’s all part of initiatives underway to create great places linked to new transport in Newcastle.

“The Newcastle Interchange will become a key hub in the brand new integrated transport system that will transform the way people move around and reinvigorate Newcastle,” said Cassel.

The new Interchange’s distinctive, modern ‘space frame’ roof pays homage to Newcastle’s steel manufacturing heritage, and it will give locals and visitors an appropriate nod to the past as Newcastle steps onto the world stage.
