Tyres hit the road for Safer Drivers Course
Roads Minister Duncan Gay has announced that from today young drivers can start signing up for the Safer Drivers Course, following the appointment of course providers.
Mr Gay today also launched the curriculum which was developed by a board of independent road safety experts.
"We know that the most dangerous time for a young driver is the six months after they begin driving independently on their P-Plates," Minister Gay said.
"The Safer Drivers Course has been designed to address the road safety risks that drivers under 25 face at this time.
"Our board of road safety experts considered the latest research in young driver safety specifically designed for learner drivers and I’m confident it’s a well targeted program.
"It will go a long way to helping families meet the 120 log book hours required for new drivers.
"We already grant 20 credit hours to any learner who takes 10 hours of professional lessons, now an additional 20 hours will now also apply for those that attend the Safer Drivers Course.
"That means a learner who completes both 10 hours of on-road lessons and the Safer Drivers Course will receive 40 credit logbook hours.
"The course will be kept at affordable levels for young drivers with a cost of $140 and the Community Road Safety Fund will subsidise the rest of the cost.
"Also from today learner drivers and motorcyclists in NSW will be allowed to travel at 90km/h, up from 80km/h. "The speed limit increase aims to give learners more supervised driving experience at higher speeds in preparation for their graduation to P-Plates. "The research tells us that crash rates increase when learners graduate from their learner licence to their provisional licence and this change is all about trying to prevent that trend continuing," Minister Gay said.
Interested learner drivers can visit www.rms.nsw.gov.au and http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/geared/index.html to book directly with a course provider.
A second round tender for course providers across the state will begin in late July to enable the course to be delivered further throughout New South Wales. Potential providers are encouraged to visit https://tenders.nsw.gov.au/ for more information.
The Safer Drivers Course involves a three-hour facilitated group discussion with up to 12 learners focussing on risks and safe driving behaviours.
The second part of the course is a two-hour in-vehicle coaching session that helps learner drivers manage risks on the road.
Learner drivers need to complete 50 log book hours prior to doing the Safer Drivers course so they have the basic vehicle control skills necessary to get maximum value from the course.
