Sydney's Rail Future

Sydney’s Rail Future is a long term plan to increase the capacity of Sydney’s heavy rail network through investment in new services and upgrading of existing infrastructure.  It is a plan to improve the customer’s experience by modernising Sydney’s rail network. It was released on 20 June 2012.

Sydney’s Rail Future is an integral part of the NSW Long Term Transport Master Plan. It reflects the feedback we received from thousands of people interested in seeing improvements to rail services in Sydney through comments made on the NSW Long Term Transport Master Plan Discussion Paper released in February 2012. We have also engaged with transport experts who have provided invaluable input into the process.

Sydney’s Rail Future covers five key stages:

• Operational efficiencies
• Network efficiencies
• New rapid transit system
• Second Harbour Crossing
• Southern sector conversion

Implementation of Sydney’s Rail Future will eventually enable Sydney trains to carry another 90,000 to 100,000 people per hour in the peak. This will provide the largest increase in capacity in 80 years.
